The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, acknowledge the centrality of the youth and their role in the path towards sustainable development. The young people of today will mature in the next 15 years. The youth are the people who will experience the success or failure of the 2030 Agenda. Failure is not an option. That is why it is important to engage with the youth and empower them in all efforts to have a more sustainable future.
Recognizing this, the Government, in partnership with the United Nations and the Youth for SDGs Coalition have come up with the “One Million Youth SDG Solutions” initiative, which focuses on solutions to improve the quality of life for all. The initiative is aimed at identifying and mobilizing Ugandan youth to present one million solutions which are changing lives in order to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. The initiative will identify solutions at national and sub-national level, leaving no one behind in efforts to accelerate achievement of the SDGs. The one million solutions initiative builds upon the 21 youth innovators who were identified during UN at 74 commemoration activities in Uganda in 2019, and the call by the UN Secretary General to hear the voices of youth around the world about the SDGs and the United Nations. To ensure that solutions are recognized by government, development partners and private sector, the Government and the UN in Uganda asked the National SDG Secretariat, under the Office of the Prime Minister, to work with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator to serve as hub for the youth submitting solutions.The launch of the initiative will kick off activities in Uganda to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations.
