ONE MILLION SDG SOLUTIONS FROM YOUTH IN UGANDA

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) acknowledge the centrality of youth and their role in the path towards sustainable development. It is important to engage with the youth and empower them in all efforts to have a more sustainable future. Recognizing this, the Government of Uganda, in partnership with the United Nations and the Youth for SDGs Coalition have come up with the “One Million Youth SDG Solutions” initiative. It is aimed at identifying and mobilizing Ugandan youth to present one million solutions which are changing lives in order to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. The initiative will identify solutions at national and sub-national level, leaving no one behind. It will also kick off activities in Uganda to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, also known as UN75, which is a call for all people, including the youth, to join the conversation on shaping the world’s future. This will include in-depth discussions on development trends and potential solutions to global and country-specific challenges.

Youth and the SDGs

Far from being mere beneficiaries of the 2030 Agenda, young people have been active architects in its development and continue to be engaged in the frameworks and processes that support its implementation, follow-up and review. The adoption of the 2030 Agenda represented the culmination of an extensive three-year process involving Member States and civil society, including youth organizations, in the development of specific goals and targets and marked the beginning of a 15-year journey to achieve sustainable development by 2030.Uganda adopted the National Youth Policy in 2001, with the specific goal of enhancing the economic contributions of youth. The policy was a reaction to worsening youth conditions, where an increase in rural to urban youth migration was not accompanied by job creation.
